Good evening everyone. As some of you might know, I love movies. I watch several and I enjoy posting reviews about ones that, in my opinion, are outstanding. Ones that would be a shame to miss. Well, here’s another one.
FREE STATE OF JONES
Based on a true story, this movie will not only move you but it will stay with you for a long time.
In 1863, Mississippi farmer Newt Knight serves as a medic for the Confederate Army. Opposed to slavery, Knight would rather help the wounded than fight the Union. After his nephew dies in battle, Newt returns home to Jones County to safeguard his family but is soon branded an outlaw deserter. Forced to flee, he finds refuge with a group of runaway slaves hiding out in the swamps. Forging an alliance with the slaves and other farmers, Knight leads a rebellion that would forever change history.
The story is interspersed with the saga of Newton’s great-great-great grandson, who is arrested under Mississippi’s miscegenation laws 85 years after the war. Since he is of one-eighth black descent, under Mississippi law of the day he is considered black, and therefore cannot legally marry his long-time sweetheart. He is sentenced to five years in prison, but his conviction is thrown out by theMississippi Supreme Court rather than risk the law being declared unconstitutional.
BE SURE TO CHECK THIS MOVIE OUT. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. ENJOY!!
