This Week’s Read…Julie Doherty

Hi everyone. This week I  hosting Julie Doherty and her amazing book, Scent of the Soul. If you want a mix of tough men, beautiful women, danger, and romance, look no further than right here. Enjoy!

BLURB:

In twelfth century Scotland, it took a half-Gael with a Viking name to restore the clans to their rightful lands. Once an exile, Somerled the Mighty now dominates the west. He’s making alliances, expanding his territory, and proposing marriage to the Manx princess.

It’s a bad time to fall for Breagha, a torc-wearing slave with a supernatural sense of smell.
Somerled resists the intense attraction to a woman who offers no political gain, and he won’t have a mistress making demands on him while he’s negotiating a marriage his people need. Besides, Breagha belongs to a rival king, one whose fresh alliance Somerled can’t afford to lose.

It’s when Breagha vanishes that Somerled realizes just how much he needs her. He abandons his marriage plans to search for her, unprepared for the evil lurking in the shadowy recesses of Ireland—a lustful demon who will stop at nothing to keep Breagha for himself.

Q & A TIME:

1. What made you want to become a writer?                                           Quite simply, I love telling stories. I wish I didn’t. I’d have a lot more spare time.

2. How do you come up with the names for your characters?             If I’m writing something historical, I look through period documents for names. For example, when choosing names in my 18th century tale, SCATTERED SEEDS, I scanned the indenture registries. No shortage of names there! If I’m working on a contemporary story, I try to choose a name that fits the character’s personality. In my current work-in-progress, one character is on her third name, and I’m still not happy with it. We’ll see how that pans out.

3. Do you have a certain spot that you love to write in?                  Okay, don’t laugh, but I love writing in my car, which I fondly call “The Time Machine.” It’s truly the only place I can go for distraction-free writing. Unless you count the time I parked behind the grocery store and two employees used their break to create their own romance. I guess they didn’t see me.

4. When not writing, what do you like to do in your spare time?           I have a day job thirty-five miles from home, so I don’t have much spare time. Even my vacations involve some type of research for a story I’m working on. My last “vacation” was a two-day trip to Erie, Pennsylvania, where I sailed on the brig, Niagara to get footage for SCATTERED SEEDS’s book trailer.
5. What is the best advice you have ever gotten?                               “Never give up.” My dad gave me that one, and he was right. If you want something badly enough, you have to go after it.

6. If your book was made into a movie, who would you love to see plays the main characters? Heath Ledger would have been so perfect for the part of Somerled, and I’m still heartbroken over his death. He had that glorious wide forehead and the eyes that I describe in SCENT as:
“deeply set—sailing eyes, the kind made for scanning horizons and seeking out the world’s edge. She saw intelligence in them, and experience beyond his years. She saw, too, infinite responsibility and conflict. His eyes were like doors, locked doors, to a chamber never visited.”

For Breagha, the actress Elena Satine comes to mind.

“Her eyes were frightened and searching. They were green—vivid green—like Islay’s fields in mid-summer. Above them, her hair gleamed like a polished hazelnut.”

If Steve Buscemi shaved his head, he would make a great Semjaza.

“Gone also were his hazel eyes, replaced by glowing slits of yellow fury. . . . a head, a hairless one, as cold and bumpy as an oyster shell.”

Vigelantes Anyone? Part One. Movies…

Hi everybody. Now that my first book, Angel in the Shadows, has been released (Aug 19th on Amazon) everyone is asking me where I get my ideas for coming up with such characters. Well, one source for my inspirations is movies.

I LOVE movies. All types of movies. Comedy, drama, sci-fi, romance, horror, action, etc. As long as it’s good, I will watch it. But we’re not talking about all movies today are we?

Today I am talking about those action packed movies that center around those top secret people that work just outside of the law, that take out the bad guys that fail to register on the government’s radar. Those specialized individuals that come and go as they please without ever getting caught or identified. That’s right, I’m talking about…Vigelantes

**Now before I continue, let me just stop here and say, I am not condoning vigelantism by many means. This is just about those movies that get my creative juices flowing. That being said, I will continue.**

There has always been something so intriguing to me about these movies. Maybe it’s the danger and subsequent adrendaline rush. Maybe it’s the fight for justice when there seems to be none. Maybe it’s the hero/heroine that is cold enough to shoot someone in the head like it’s nothing yet in the end reveals that they have a good heart-they may fall in love-and do in fact, have a soul. (yeah, I’m a hopeless romantic-even with these type of movies. I’m a sap, I know it. 😍) Whatever it is, these movies inspire me like no other. So I’ve decided to share with you, in order, my top 3 favorite vigelante-esque movies of all time. Enjoy!

#1. HITMAN (2007) Starring Timothy Olyphant and Ogla Kurylenko *MY FAVORITE*

A gun-for-hire known only as Agent 47 hired by a group known only as ‘The Organization’ is ensnared in a political conspiracy, which finds him pursued by both Interpol and the Russian military as he treks across Russia and Eastern Europe. **Timothy Olyphant is easily one of the hottest me I have ever seen. add Robert Pattinson and Johnny Depp to that, and you will have my top 3 hottest men list. Aside from my sexxy hubby Shaun of course). And in this movie, Timothy is a total badass that is highly skilled in the role of a killer but is at a loss when he begins to care for the woman that gets in his way…(Pssst, this is how I always picture my heros in The Perfect Order to be).**

#2. WANTED (2008) Starring Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy

A frustrated office worker learns that he is the son of a professional assassin, and that he shares his father’s superhuman killing abilities. **Although the main focus of movie is on the male character and his personal journey to vigelantism, I pay more attention to Angelina’s part. Simply because:(Spoiler Alert) in book 3 of The Perfect Order series-Angel Rising-(if I can get that far), the vigelante is a woman. Come on, I can’t let the guys have all the fun now can I? 😜**

#3. THE EQUALIZER Starring Denzel Washington and Chloe Grace Morentz

A man believes he has put his mysterious past behind him and has dedicated himself to beginning a new, quiet life. But when he meets a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters, he can’t stand idly by-he has to help her. **This guy has had a hard life. He’s lost everything that matters but soon he finds something that wakes him up and makes realize that some things are still worth fighting for. I love this just because I want my characters to always fight for what is right no matter what.**

AND THE RUNNER-UPS ARE:

  • MR. AND MRS. SMITH Starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

A bored married couple is surprised to learn that they are both assassins hired by competing agencies to kill each other.

  • THE MECHANIC Starring Jason Statham and Donald Sutherland

Follows an elite hit man as he teaches his trade to an apprentice who has a connection to one of his previous victims.

  • THE BOURNE IDENTITY (and subsequent movies) Starring Matt Damon and Franka Potente

Matt Damon is Jason Bourne, an elite government agent determined to outwit and outmaneuver anyone who stands in the way of his finding out the secrets of his mysterious past.

So there you have it. The top movies that are the inspiration for my Perfect Order series. If you haven’t watched any of these, you definitely should. Thanks for stopping by. And check back later for more posts about what inspires me to write vigelante stories.

songsaboutmermaidsWhen I Googled “Songs about Mermaids,” I came up with 1,270,000 hits. While I don’t plan to visit all those sites, I will share a selection of songs over the next few months.

In today’s post, I’m featuring a group of Canadian artists, two of whom are near and dear to me.

After receiving my contract for Between Land and Sea, I asked my musically talented brothers to compose the music for the trailer. I had envisioned my brothers collaborating and composing one theme song, but that’s not how their muses worked. Each brother had his own unique interpretation of the middle-aged mermaid who was aged beyond recognition and then dumped on the fog-drenched shores of southwest England. Unable to choose between them, I decided to use both versions and hired Erin Kelly to produce the trailers.

Ernie G came up with the Yin version. Aptly titled, “It’s Your Time,”…

 Never Turn Your Back…

 Never Reveal Your Name…

 Never Surrender Your Heart…

Madison Sinclair is a smart-mouthed photographer that enjoys the simple things in life. Recently landing a job at one of Manhattan’s top imaging companies, she works hard to prove herself but often falls short of the mark. Taking pictures of the New York scenery, relaxing at home with a glass of wine, and caring for her stray cat is the highlight of her day. But when her best friend convinces her into covering a charity event thrown by a handsome billionaire, Madison’s life suddenly becomes anything but simple as she finds herself in a constant race for survival. There is nowhere she can turn, no one she can trust.

Seth Reynolds has been in the game a long time. He knows how to get in, get a job done, and get out with no complications and no witnesses. Trained to be cold and heartless, he is committed to follow through with this mission no matter what. Racing against an impossible time table, everything is in place to take out the madman intent on destroying New York City. But when the naïve Madison Sinclair stumbles into his world, all of his carefully laid plans go to hell.

Determined to do what is right at all costs, Seth must choose between the rules he’s lived by his entire life or saving Madison from a fate worse than death. If he follows orders, he will be an unsung hero, saving millions of innocent people. But if he risks his own life for Madison’s, the entire city will be in jeopardy. The choice should be easy. Risk one to save many. That’s the unbreakable code of The Perfect Order. But now, without even trying, Madison has gotten under his skin and inside his heart. With the fate of the city resting in his hands, how he can do the right thing when he no longer knows what that is?

FOR THE LOVE OF A GYPSY

Her laughter twinkled along the wind, reaching out to him.She turned, saw him, and moved to flee, but she hesitated and fully faced him with a curious glint in her eyes, the tilt of her head.

She had large eyes, a full mouth, and high cheekbones. Bright colors comprised her long skirt that failed to hide her bare feet.

A Gypsy.

mermaidsightingsWhile skeptics do exist, there are many people in our 2K world who are intrigued by the prospect of mermaids. Each new sighting raises expectations and generates renewed interest among the scientific community, local governments, and media outlets.

2008: Late one evening, Daniel Cupido and his friends heard an unusual sound while walking along the beach in Suurbraak, a village in the Western Cape of South Africa. Upon approaching, Cupido found a figure “like that of a white woman with long, black hair trashing about in the water.” When he tried to help, she uttered a sorrowful sound. Local tourism officer Maggy Jantijies vouched for the credibility of the group.

2009: Shlomo Cohen was one of the first to see the mermaid near Kiryat Yam in Israel. He provided the following report for the Israel National News: “I was with friends when suddenly we saw a woman lying on the…

This Week’s Read…Merritt Kelly

Hi everybody! Today I am hosting the incredible author Merritt Kelly and her amazing book, Threads. Just by reading the excerpt that I have included in this post, I am already hooked. Both by the main character and the awesome detail that Merritt puts into her writing. Please continue to read and find out more about Merritt and her wonderful story Threads.  Enjoy!!

EXCERPT:
It was Carda’s job to get the Thread. Her tiny wings flapped silently as she hovered above it, her delicate fingers pulling it from the center of the flower. It was an important job. The Thread was priceless and a part of everything the Garden Fairies do. This was her first time. She had to be careful. If she pulled too hard she would surely break the delicate thread. If she flew too long and became tired she might fall or be discovered.

N’ela, her aged mentor hovered in the distance, arms folded, watching her every move. Carda’s long dark hair fluttered about her in the breeze caused by the incessant beating of her wings. Her green eyes surveyed the batch of Crocuses that she must finish. It was a timed test and only the fastest and the best would hold the title of Threader. She exhaled reminding herself to stay calm. That seemed nearly impossible, the family honor was at stake. Her mother was a Threader and her mother before her. She pushed the negative thoughts aside and reminded herself that she was born for this. She flitted along, deftly gathering threads, placing them in the canvas sack that was slung over one shoulder.

The test was timed for a reason. In a few minutes the sun would be up and the giants would wake. They must not see. The Garden Fairies had survived because they remained hidden. They didn’t exist in the world of the giants. Carda suddenly stopped. She’d allowed herself to become distracted and now her fingers were tangled in the Threads. Time was wasting. She mustn’t break the Threads. She looked down at her now yellow stained fingers, her mind racing. N’ela’s thoughts pushed through to her consciousness. Carda did as as N’ela told her.

“I am one,” Carda repeated to herself. As if by magic the Threads untangled from her fingers. Once she had become disengaged she pulled the Threads gently from the base of the flower. Each handful had more than the last. It was getting lighter outside and she was in a race against time. Once the sun was up over the hill it would be light the garden, the giants would wake. She could see N’ela buzzing back and forth out of the corner of her eye like an expectant mother. Three years of training had come to this and she didn’t want to disappoint her. The light began to break, just over the hills.

The Connection as it was called, was strong. They felt each other’s emotions and heard each other’s thoughts as all fairies could. Like fire the dawn began to spread. Quickly N’ela stuffed the last of the Threads in to her sack. She held up her sack triumphantly.

QUESTION AND ANSWER TIME!

Q 1. What made you want to become a writer?

A. I’ve always loved words. I tried to write my first play at ten I knew I’d be a writer in some capacity somehow, some way.
Q 2. What gives you inspiration for your book ideas?
A. Everything from cooking shows to personal experience to news articles and even dreams. My biggest challenge is reigning it and making sense of it all. I gets lots of ideas and sometimes I have to trim away or focus on a specific things so the relationship of the characters isn’t lost.

Q 3. If your book had a soundtrack to it, what songs would be on it?

A. Wow. That’s tough one. I’m a music lover of all genres. I’ll take two. Squeeze Black Coffee and maybe Pour Some Sugar on me Def Lepard. Black Coffee would Andrea’s song and Def Lepard is for my hero Danny in Bed.

Q 4. Would you like to try other genres?

A. Well as a matter of fact I’m trying my hand at combining food romance and murder mystery, just for fun. I’ll let you know how it turns out. I wanted to see how it would work. I don’t picture myself writing cozy mysteries. It may end up being more story driven than romance driven. The characters are older and deeply flawed, but it’s very funny. There’s more focus on the familial relationships and story than the romance.

Q 5. What advice would you give to new authors?

A. I don’t know that I’m in any position to give advice. I think you know if you are compelled to write, if you need to write. So the advice is simple. Write. The hardest part of that is believing in your talent and that what you have to say is worthwhile. You’ll question it a lot, know that’s part of the process and that will be what makes you work harder to improve.

Q6. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be? And why?

A. Switzerland! There you get the part of it that’s French, Italian, as well as the part that is uniquely Swiss. Great wine, cheese, chocolate, mountains fabulous scenery All of Europe is only a train ride away How can you lose?

I Wasn’t Ready For This…

Hi everybody. Well, today is a big day. It’s my little girl’s birthday. I guess she’s not little anymore though because today at 2:09 p.m., she will turn 13. Even as I type this, I want to cry. Don’t get me wrong. I am so happy that she’s grown into a beautiful young lady. I know how lucky I am that she is healthy because there are so many others that aren’t. And even more that don’t make it to see their teenage years. So I am very grateful. And proud.

I am so proud of her. She has been through a lot. The divorce of her father and myself, my remarriage, gaining a step father and step sister, switching schools, and coping with dyslexia. But through it all, she has been trying to be strong and move forward. And it has not been easy. But she’s keeping her head held high.

I worked a lot when she was a baby and as a toddler and even though I was home every night, I feel like I missed out on so many things. Things and times that I can’t get back. But on the other hand, I was there for several wonderful moments that I will carry with me forever.

Like when I came home from work and she would run to me and give me the biggest hug that her little arms could make. Or when she would wait all day to watch her favorite movie at the time, Peter Pan (the 2003 film), until I came in the door and we watched it at least 3 times a day for like 3 months straight.  And of course, there was story time, hearing her first word, bath time, watching her learn to walk, and teaching her to ride a bike.

There were a lot of great times and even better memories. But even so, I am not ready for this. I am not ready for her to be, dare I say it, a *gulp* teenager…

She rolls her eyes and simply groans, “Mom…..” every time I get emotional about her continual advance in age. But I can’t help it. She’s my little girl. My first born. My monkey. And I can’t help but get teary eyed every time I think about how much she’s grown, every time I look at her baby pictures, or watch the hours and hours of videos that I have taken of her over the years.

Maybe I’m just being crazy or silly but I’m sure I’m not the only parent to feel this way right? I’m not the only parent that wonders how in the world their baby got to be in their teens almost over night. How did my little girl go from this

  to this so fast?

I don’t know how it happened and I am so NOT ready for this but no matter what or how old she gets, she will always be my little girl. Happy birthday. I love you Hailey Grace.
