Terrorists have invaded Sydney, and Allison King barely escapes her brother’s wedding reception alive. She and her siblings flee, but their parents are killed by firing squad.
Now Ali’s on the run and terrified. While searching for other survivors, she is captured by the General who leads the invasion. He’s smitten by Ali, and when she refuses to submit to his whims, he brands her for death. In a wild act of defiance, she snatches the branding rod and sears the mark onto his face. Marking not only him but also sealing her fate. Ali manages to escape and flees into the bush once more where she finds a group in hiding. Even with the scars left by the General, Ali learns to love and falls in love with the young man who found her—Damien Rogers.
But the General is hunting her. When he discovers their location, and finds her with another man—Damien—his wrath is kindled and his obsession is inflamed. Ali must put herself on the line or the General could kill her family, those who help her, and most significantly, the man she loves.
Question 1: What made you first decide to become an author?
It just kind of happened. I’ve been writing stories since I was a kid, and over the years it just evolved. As a new mother, I wanted to work from home, so I decided to look into what it would take to get published. So I cleaned up my work, and queried around. I’ve been blessed to have this opportunity to do something I love to help my family while staying home to raise my child.
Question 2: Where do you get the ideas for your books?
All over the place. Music, movies, other books, new reports, history. There’s no limit to where inspiration comes from.
Question 3: What’s your favorite part of being an author?
As I said before, doing something I love while being able to stay at home to raise my child, or soon to be children. Sometimes dividing my attention can be difficult, but doing both roles is the most fulfilling feeling.
Question 4: What authors did you read growing up?
Let me see… Elyne Mitchell, J.K. Rowling, John Marsden, Jeanne Betancourt, and Bonnie Bryant. My younger years had a horse theme ha ha!
Question 5: If you could take a trip anywhere in the world, where would it be? Why?
The Mediterranean. I’d love to see the ancient word from Rome to Damascus, and from Macedonia all the way own the Nile. I just think the ancient world is so fascinating and there’s so much to be explored and discovered. So much of the world as we know it was born there.
Ok questions done!
And now an excerpt:
We pushed through some bushes. Damien sat on an outcropping, facing west. He hadn’t heard us coming, but sang with all his conviction into the twilight sky. The whole scene was so beautiful that I paused, mesmerized.
“He’s waiting for you,” Kelly whispered. “Go to him.”
I gazed at her. “No, I don’t—”
“Yes, you do.” She pushed me forward, and I stumbled through the bushes onto the rock surface.
He smiled at me, still singing, and patted the rock. I sat beside him as the sun set. Between the verse and the chorus, he paused. “Sing with me, Ali.”
“No, I . . .” I paused my protest as he continued singing. “You have a beautiful voice.”
He smiled down at me without stopping. I hummed along with him. I rested against his shoulder, and his arm wrapped around my waist. Slowly, I started to sing with him.
He looked down at me as we finished the song together and smiled. “You have a beautiful voice, too. Why did you try to hide it?”
My cheeks warmed. “Singing seems fickle now.”
“Singing can lift the heavy soul.”
